Harvey has a good reason for including the book, “Bleak House”, by “Charles Dickens” in “Find the Magic,” her first painting of Rip Squeak and His Friends. “A Harnett ancestor of mine was employed by dickens while he wrote this book!” Julia Harnett Harvey was born in Essex, England and her father, an artist in his own right, was her first art teacher. After graduating from the Southend College of Art, she worked in the commercial art field in both England and Canada. Inspired by another Harnett, the most influential trompe l’oeil painter of the mid-nineteenth century, William Harnett (1848-1892). Julia continued her fine art studies in Toronto where she was among the selected few chosen for the prestigious Master’s work program at the Royal Ontario Museum. Upon joining a noted Canadian film studio, Julia’s talents were quickly utilized on the production of many animated educational and commercial films, including a television series produced for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Later, Julia became an integral part of the Hanna-Barbera studio in Hollywood, California, working on television classics like Yogi Bear, the Flintstones, Scooby Doo and the feature films, “Charlotte’s Web” and “Heidi’s song.” Simultaneously with her animation career, Julia owned and operated a popular studio gallery in North Hollywood with her husband, artist Maurice Harvey. There, she divided her time between teaching classes in painting and life drawing, producing design and illustration for Walt Disney publications, and editing the art instruction book, Landscape/Seascape in acrylics by Maurice Harvey. After many busy years, Julia and her Husband sold their gallery to concentrate on their fine art careers. Julia Harnett Harvey now resides and paints in her Carmel Valley home and studio. We are pleased to introduce Julia and her distinguished work for all our Rip Squeak fans. |
