Welman¹s early years were spent travelling all over Europe to study painting and drawing, and copying the masters in Europe¹s museums. He studied under Frans and Jan Hazeveld in Amsterdam, and then more formally at the Kunstnijverheids School in Amsterdam, and at the Academy van Beeldende Kunst. Welman is a figurative painter. When he arrived in Southern California he was instantly struck by the vivid California landscape and the wide variety of subject matter­ocean, desert, mountains, and especially the Big Sur coast.

Welman still paints the figure, but also spends a lot of time painting his favorite landscapes on location. Welman has been active in Southern California for many years. He has been widely exhibited and his artworks have won many awards. His works are found in many private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan.
